Stress is an unfortunate but inevitable part of life. While some stress is normal and even helpful at times, too much stress can negatively impact your health, relationships, and quality of life. If you're feeling overwhelmed by stress, try incorporating some of these holistic stress reduction techniques into your daily routine:
-
Practice deep breathing. Taking some deep, slow breaths is a simple but effective way to lower your stress levels. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and breathe in slowly through your nose so your stomach expands. Breathe out through your mouth. Repeat for 5 to 10 minutes a day for the best results.
-
Get some exercise. Exercise is a great outlet for your stressful feelings. Even taking a 30 minute walk can help clear your mind and release feel-good hormones that combat stress. Yoga or Tai Chi are also excellent for both the mind and body. Find an activity you enjoy and stick with it for maximum stress relief.
-
Limit alcohol and caffeine. Both alcohol and caffeine can exacerbate feelings of stress and anxiety. Cut back or eliminate alcohol and coffee/energy drinks from your diet to avoid spikes and crashes in mood and energy levels. Staying hydrated with water and herbal tea is a much healthier alternative.
-
Practice mindfulness. Spending a few minutes each day being fully present in the moment can help shift your mind from stressful thoughts. Try meditating, journaling, or simply sitting outside and observing your surroundings. Appreciate the simple pleasures in each moment. Mindfulness takes practice but can be very rewarding.
-
Get enough sleep. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night to allow your body and mind to rest. Lack of sleep can intensify stressful feelings by negatively impacting your mood and thought processes. Develop a relaxing bedtime routine and make your bedroom as comfortable as possible for the best chance of getting good quality sleep.
Stress may be unavoidable, but you have the power to manage your stress levels through natural and holistic techniques. Try out a few of these methods and stick with what works best for you. Your mind and body will thank you.
